Queen Marie of Romania by Philip de Laszlo, 1936

Queen Marie wrote of Philip de Laszlo’s portrait which she had not seen quite finished, but those who had, told her it was ‘superb, at the same time dignified and simple, extremely royal’. “He realised by being with me, talking with me, learning to know me really, what I really was today, and understood that I had stripped off so much belonging to those days when I was shining before the world as a brilliantly successful and glorified Queen. He understood that, if I had lost in brilliance, I had gained in depth, purified by all the grief and the many renouncement… I had to be purified and to learn how much of my old life was vanity… It is not in vain that, on decline, so much is taken from us. It is so as to prepare us for the end. To sow the seed of longing for another life in our tired souls”…

I have been really lucky to identify a photograph which you can see here from June 1936 where Queen Marie  is wearing the same gown and diamond tiara as in the painting of Philip de Laszlo. Diana Mandache
