A Very Happy Birthday to HRH Prince Nicholas! Today Prince Nicholas celebrates his 28th birthday

Twenty one years ago HRH Prince Nicholas, the son of Princess Helena and grandson of HM King Michael, arrived for the first time in Romania. He was just 7 years old, and his perceptions of his heroic grandfather’s homeland were those of a child who came along with his mother and grandparents, but put suddenly in the front of the sheer enthusiasm of the over one million Bucharest people who came to greet King Michael for the first time in a half of century, after his forced abdication in 1947. He is the third in the line of the succession to the Romanian throne. Nicholas is held in high regard by his family and also by the Romanians. DM

Queen Marie’s Driving License to be auctioned

Auctions, Queen Marie of Romania

A Romanian auction house is scheduling a sale of the driving licence of Queen Marie, issued in the period when she was still a Crown Princess of Romania. The document was issued by The Touring Club of Munich, presumably for the use during her frequent visits of her mother, the Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The young princess’ car make, mentioned on the papers, was a Mercedes 35h, no. of fabrication 5060, the series of the car engine being 7798. This is a fascinating item to be auctioned next week. I will keep you informed about the final result. The estimated price is € 2.000 – 4.000. The price is unrealistic in my opinion, typical of the local inexperienced antiques market. What a beautiful collector’s item! Diana

Price Realized € 5000

Prince Nicholas of Romania

Prince Nicholas of Romania, the third in the line of succesion to the Romanian throne, has just finished his studies at the University of London, and returned to his home country. The Romanian press is in general poorly acquainted with the constitutional set up of the Romanian Royal Family and its internal Fundamental Rules, especially regarding its younger members such as Prince Nicholas, making contradictory and confusing statements (for correct information please see The Romanian Dynasty today: Line of succesion)

I organised last Sunday (24 June '12) a thematic architectural tour in Bellu Cemetery, also known as the national pantheon of Romania. We visited the Christian Orthodox section of this huge necropolis, which is in its turn is divided in a civilian part, the largest, and a smaller military one. I found there a headstone marking the grave of an US Army soldier and relief worker from the Great War era: "Edward Newell Ware, Illinois, Pvt.

"Patrie & Destin" de Diana Mandache, Crown Princess Margarita of Romania, King Michael of Romania, Principesa Mostenitoare a Romaniei, Romanian Royal Family

Your are invited to the book launch of “Fatherland and Destiny. The Crown Princess of Romania” by Diana Mandache.

Thursday 31 May 2012, 2 pm, at The ‘Bookfest’

Bucharest (Romexpo), Pavilion C2,  LITERA publishing house

“Fatherland and Destiny” [Patrie si Destin] brings for the first time together, a significant part of the myriad of events, places and people encountered throughout the life of Her Royal Highness The Crown Princess Margarita of Romania. Her destiny is often congruent with that of her father, King Michael, and her life has been profoundly influenced by the more recent history of her country and south east Europe. His Majesty is the one who, by naming Princess Margarita as his successor, has shown vision in understanding the necessity to adapt to the realities of the new century, paralleling the approach of his illustrious predecessors King Carol I or King Ferdinand, in the 19th or the 20th century. Modernity and adaptability to new conditions thus ensures the continuation of the monarchy. Diana Mandache
