X Ray picture of Queen Elisabeth of Romania’s hand taken with an early Roentgen machine (www.royalromania.wordpress.com)

Queen Elisabeth of Romania (Carmen Sylva) had in 1896 an x ray image of her right hand taken at ‘Scoala de Poduri’ in Bucharest (the old Romanian technical university), with the first Roentgen machine imported in the country. The queen volunteered to have this photograph taken in order to inspire confidence in her fellow countrymen in that revolutionary medical technology based on x rays, discovered by the German professor Wilhelm Roentgen just the year before, in 1895. It is in my opinion a valuable piece of medical, social and also royal history. The radiography was recently sold for 800 Euro (in my view well bellow its market and historic value) at a Bucharest auction house (starting price 250 Euro). Diana Mandache

This is a rare and valuable fan that belonged to Queen Elisabeth of Romania, which was estimated at Christie’s, London (South Kensington) between  £3,000 – £5,000 ($5,211 – $8,685), and sold for £2,880 ($5,003) in February 2006. I would say that the amount paid for the acquisition at the auction was quite a good price for this more peculiar historical item. DM

Description: Queen Elisabeth of Romania’s Fan. The canepin leaf painted with wisteria signed E. Fanty Lescure and painted with a poem: ’Une Aile d’Ange d’aigle ou d’abeile c’est toujours une ail!’ signed ‘Carmen Sylva’, with mother of pearl sticks, the gold guardsticks enamelled in colours with daffodils, iris, lily and sunflowers, unsigned but probably by Paul Telge, Berlin, possibly to a design by the Queen of Romania, 33cm, circa 1895, in Perspex case. Provenance: Princess Elizabeth Bibesco.

A fan also painted by Emma Fanty Lescure with very similar gold enamelled guardsticks was sold in these rooms 13 July 1978. It was in a fan box labelled Paul Telge – Berlin and had a note enclosed: Fan ornamented in gold enamels designed by Carmen Sylva H.M. the Queen of Romania; it was not painted with a poem signed Carmen Sylva. It is now no. 141 in the Helen Alexander collection and has been exhibited: Royal Fans, The Fan Circle International, 1985-6, Salisbury, Guildford and Harwood House, no. 160; The Fan Museum, 2001, no. 45; Royal Fans, The Fan Museum Greenwich, 2002, no. 47.

The image above is a photograph of the music sheet cover for the valse “CARMEN SYLVA” (‘grande valse pour piano), a late c19th compostion by Ed. A. Hübsch. The valse is dedicated to Queen Elisabeth of Romania, who was also known by her pen name as Carmen Sylva. The design of the cover is typical late Victorian, containing a number of rococo cherubs that together hold a book decorated with Carmen Sylva’s monogram, the whole assembly suggesting her serene artistic inclinations and sensibility, while the prominent crown reminds of Queen Elisabeta’s patronage of arts in general and music and literature in particular. DM

The GRAPHOLOGICAL PERSONALITY READING of Carmen Sylva

“A person’s handwriting is a photograph of his character”, this is the principle stated by Hugo von Hagen, the President of the American Graphological Society and member of Societe Graphologique, when he analysed in 1919 Carmen Sylva’s personality from her handwriting, in a graphology textbook aimed at experts, students and laymen:

Hothouse plant; very sensitive, nervous nature. Runs with head against wall and pities the wound thus made. Cannot adapt herself to circumstances but wants circumstances to adapt themselves to her. Eternally desiring; never satisfied. Artistic soul. Never understood by others, as she does not care to understand them. Influenced by impressions and sentiments. Must be handled carefully with gloves. Loves to be worshipped. Wants to be admired and sought, but seems outwardly indifferent and cold, although most anxious to be found. Admires herself. Pities herself in a rough, coarse world. Sighs dreamingly. Undertakes large and wonderful things in thought, but comes down considerably when executing them. Puts blame upon others, demands perfection in others but cannot see faults in herself. Desires to direct others and make them subservient to her. Hysterically inclined. Enforces her way in all seeming humility. Never gives up a wish or desire once made. Loves warmly and sincerely as long as she can be the only queen of the heart she loves at the time.

What I like in this analyze is the look at Queen Elisabeth as a real human being with good and bad treats and not as an idealized, magazine cover fairy tale princess. It is an excellent glimpse into how a person with so many talents as hers existed in the real world.

Carmen Sylva: ART

It is more essential for the poet to be  true in sentiment than in invention.

The artist is in love with a blank canvas, an empty sheet of paper, a piece of rough marble. As soon as his hand has rendered them immortal, he regards them with horror ; and woe to him if he remains in love with them.

Bad poets make of language what bad priests make of religion : a narrow prison.

People call ugliness truth, just as they call coarseness candour.

A bad novel awakens the senses, a good novel the conscience.

Carmen Sylva: Political Aphorisms

We hasten to implant in new countries the civilization of old ones. This is like putting false teeth in the place of sound ones. In certain situations one has so often to hold one’s tongue that it at last becomes paralysed and can stammer out nothing but old worn-out phrases.

To every mortal is granted a tongue and even a pen to defend himself. Sovereigns alone are expected to be like God, who allows Himself to be slandered without replying.

A little contradiction animates conversation. This explains why courts are so dull.

To be the friend of a sovereign you must be without passion, without ambition, without egotism, clear-sighted and far-sighted; in short, not a man.

One often hears the phrase, “Put not your trust in princes!” quoted from the Bible; but the rest of the verse, “for they also are men,” is overlooked.

Women who meddle with politics are hens who make themselves vultures.

Politics resemble a desert: a blast of wind forms an enormous mountain, while mirages are frequent and dangerous.

Strictly speaking, a prince requires nothing but eyes and ears;  he does not need a mouth, except to smile.

The profession of queen demands but three qualities: beauty, bounty, and fecundity.

The multitude is like the sea: it either bears you up or swallows you, according to the wind.

On this day Princess Elizabeth of Wied married Prince Carol of Romania 140 years ago

On 3/15 November 1869 the palace in Neuwied and every single house in the town was decorated with flags and garlands. At half past five the marriage procession started and proceeded to a salon which had been arranged as a Catholic chapel. After this ceremonial they proceeded down the staircase to a hall below richly arranged as a Protestant chapel. The royal couple made their sacre promise on their knees, exchanged rings. The text of the sermon was aptly chosen, as alluding to the difficulties and troubles which were to be encountered in the far-off Eastern country: “Whither thou goest, I will go : and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God”.  The thunder of cannons announced that the marriage was concluded.

A reception and a state dinner was held at the  Neuwied Castle. In the image below is the royal menu served with that occasion at Neuwied.

Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria

These ever wakeful eyes are closed. They saw

Such grief, that they could see no more. The

heart —

That quick’ning pulse of nations — could not bear

Another throb of pain, and could not hear

Another cry of tortur’d motherhood.

Those uncomplaining lips, they sob no more

The soundless sobs of dark and burning tears,

That none have seen; they smile no more, to breathe

A mother’s comfort into aching hearts.

The patriarchal Queen, the monument

Of touching widowhood, of endless love,

And childlike purity — she sleeps. This night

Is watchful not. The restless hand, that slave

To duty, to a mastermind, to wisdom

That fathom’d history and saw beyond

The times, lies still in marble whiteness. Love

So great, so faithful, unforgetting and

Unselfish — must it sleep? Or will that veil. Continue reading »

A letter of Princess Elisabeth of Wied to her mother from Moscow in 1864

Princess Elizabeth of Wied (Diana Mandache collection)

Princess Elizabeth of Wied (Diana Mandache collection)

On 4th May 1863 Princess Elisabeth wrote from Moscow to her mother, the Princess of Wied, her first impressions of Moscow:

We are in Moscow, the old patriotic city, with its one- and two-storeyed houses, green roofs, and several hundred churches, all shining in their most variegated colours. When we arrived, a sunbeam fell through the thick clouds on some gilded cupola; the view from the Kremlin was highly impressive (curious), unhappily not sunny, but green. We look down upon nothing but verdant roofs. The dimensions of the streets are such that one scarcely knows which is street and which square. It is too wonderful.

The city, with its one-storeyed structures set in their surrounding gardens, is quite like the country – almost like a village — and yet it is very beautiful. One sees only little houses, many-hued, and much more highly-coloured churches: vivid blue with bright green roof and domes, or red, with green cupolas, or red, green and blue in the most fantastic mixture. Only in bright sunshine could I imagine Moscow peculiarly beautiful, when the hundreds of domes glisten and throw their rays on the green roofs, here, there, and everywhere. In the Kremlin I saw the church treasure, also the treasure and armour chamber, in which all the Imperial crowns are kept. I take a particular interest in this spot, for the sake of the age of these relics, and likewise the historical remembrances which are attached to them. In this room we also find the enormous silver kettles in which holy oil is prepared and sanctified. Every three years, during three days of continuous prayers, it is boiled and mixed with perfumed herbs, then it is blessed and consecrated in the church, and is called ‘la sainte crème’. Forty to fifty amphorae are filled with it, and from far and wide come prayers to possess some of this oil, because they use it for the dedication of churches, as well as for ceremonials of birth and death. For me it has something touching to think in how many ways men endeavour to hallow themselves, and although we are disposed to ask what is the benefit of this holy oil and holy water, there lies within the mere idea and its fulfilment a child-like desire to become quite pure; there is an unchanging faith in the power of prayer, which in itself is alone able to sanctify all things. In the Greek Church I find very many childish and cheerful ideas, and fewer superstitions than in the Roman Catholic belief – nothing, however, of the solemnity and earnestness of our religion. However, it strikes me that our Church in its noblest form (as I should also mention other Churches in their noblest form) is specially suited to the German character: we all have, more or less, the tendency to sound ourselves, probe into our own hearts, and to wholly retire within ourselves, and only out of our inmost souls to draw the fullness of the knowledge of God.

In June 1864 Helen, the Grand Duchess conveyed her niece back to Germany.
