This a rare historical image, the most recent gathering of the Balkan Monarchs, photograph taken on the occasion of the silver wedding anniversary of Crown Prince of Serbia. The Poll entitled “Who in your view is the most popular south-east European monarch?” has came to a close on 5 September 2009. It ran for one month and 107 of you, my blog readers, from all over the world, kindly spared time and voted one of its options. This poll being so open to a global audience through the medium of the Internet, reflects also in great measure a global opinion about the popularity of the south-east European monarchs.

The results show that King Michael of Romania is the most popular monarch in the region, a recognition of his huge merits during his reign but also as a moral beacon for many generations, showing how a man and a king has to deal in various complex situations, completely maintaining his moral integrity. The result of 50% indicates that his popularity is equal with all the other three monarchs together in the region. Continue reading »
