"Dearest Missy" by Diana Mandache, Diana Mandache, Duchess of Coburg, Duchess of Edinburgh, Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Marie Alexandrovna, Princess Marie of Edinburgh

The Letters of Marie Alexandrovna, Grand Duchess of Russia, Duchess of Edinburgh and her daughter, Princess Marie of Edinburgh, Crown Princess of Romania (1879-1900); hardback, 472 pp., 40 photos , RRB, October 2011.

Marie Alexandrovna’s life and character has been imprinted by her upbringing at the Russian imperial court, as the daughter of Tsar Alexander II, in a grandiose and yet level-headed milieu that in a great measure personified her father’s way of life and vision of the world. Her personality was thus a distinctive mix of dominant behaviour and imperial outlook, tempered by an astute, realistic perception of the world. Diana Mandache

Marie Alexandrovna and her eldest daughter, Marie of Romania exchanged regularly postcards throughout their lifetime, thus amassing a collection of such prints, especially on topographical subjects, and also other subjects, such fashion as is seen in the example above, which contains on the back (seen in the inset) a note from Marie of Romania to her mother reading “I thought you might like those post cards”.

From Zurich, in August 1917, Maria Alexandrovna, the Duchess of Coburg, in her despair about the fate of the Russian Imperial family, was looking for help from the British Royal Family, writing a few letters to George V and to the Dowager Queen Alexandra. Here is an extract from the correspondence to her eldest daughter:

This morning I read the description of how those unfortunate Nicki and Alix with their children were bundled off in the middle of the night to some unknown destination! May God have mercy on them! … In my despair about the Russian family I wrote a long letter to Aunt Alix, especially pointed out Aunt Minny’s hopeless position and asking point blank if the English government cannot really interfere to save them and let at least Aunt Minny to go to Denmark. I also wrote to George to ask him to keep me to get back my money on the base of my marriage contract, which many people think possible. But how can one really discuss with such a government as in Russia?
