TRH Princesses Margarita and Sophia of Romania. I will publish, hopefully quite soon, a book entitled “Patrie si Destin” on the life of Crown Princess of Romania, (Litera publishing house, Bucharest, May 2012).
The photograph above presents HRH Princess Margarita of Romania arriving for the first time in her country, on 18 of January 1990, at Otopeni airport, Bucharest. There was a degree of interest among the Romanian press of the time about this momentous event, but insufficiently disseminated, probably for political reasons, to make an impact among a public hungry for such news. The image bellow is Princess Margarita’s first interview given to a central Romanian newspaper.
Prince Radu: ‘Provisional Romania’ is my latest book, published by Litera International and translated into English by James Christian Brown. Foreword by Roger Griffin, professor at Oxford University. Democracy is not just a matter of 24 hours on election day. Democracy also has to be respected during the four years between elections, day-by-day, minute-by-minute, by every public institution, every representative of a public institution, and indeed every citizen. For this, the laws and framework of democracy are not sufficient. It will take the contribution of every force in Romanian society to transform into practice what we demagogically affirm in theory. And above all, we need a State that is respected and that inspires trust, with professional institutions working in a complementary and ethical way, in harmony with each other.”
Old photo from the early 1940s showing the original statue of King Carol I by Ivan Mestrovic, Bucharest (Diana Mandache collection)
The original statue was the master-work of the famous Croatian/ Yugoslav sculptor Ivan Mestovic and has been inaugurated on 10 May 1939, the National Day of the Romanian Kingdom. The statue has been pulled down by the communist government in 1948, a few months after the forced abdication of the King Michael, in a barbaric show of force using Soviet tanks to tear down the structure.
Today HRH Prince Radu of Romania delivered a conference entitled “The wise rule” at the National Theatre in Bucharest presenting his visions on the contemporary Romanian society and politics, with references to the high relevance of the monarchy in Romania’s history and also in the actual conditions when the country faces an acute economic and moral crisis, still having to recover its pre-communist values and memory. Among the audience were present HRH Princess Margarita, cultural and business personalities. With this occasion HRH also released his new book entitled “Provizoratul istoric” ['The historical contingence"] (Polirom, 2010, cover in the image bellow), which details many of the ideas expounded in the today conference.
