Old photo from the early 1940s showing the original statue of King Carol I by Ivan Mestrovic, Bucharest (Diana Mandache collection)

The original statue was the master-work of the famous Croatian/ Yugoslav sculptor Ivan Mestovic and has been inaugurated on 10 May 1939, the National Day of the Romanian Kingdom.  The statue has been pulled down by the communist government in 1948, a few months after the forced abdication of the King Michael, in a barbaric show of force using Soviet tanks to tear down the structure.

The old images – photographs, engravings etc – are the most suggestive descriptions for a historic epoch, with an excellent visual impact. For this reason I choose to post on my blog many different images showing European royals in various moments of their life. Here is one such example showing the founder of the Romanian dynasty, Prince Karl Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, shortly after he arrived in his adoptive country in May 1866. This is one one of his earliest images in a French newspaper,  L’Univers Illustre (July 1866).

On this day Princess Elizabeth of Wied married Prince Carol of Romania 140 years ago

On 3/15 November 1869 the palace in Neuwied and every single house in the town was decorated with flags and garlands. At half past five the marriage procession started and proceeded to a salon which had been arranged as a Catholic chapel. After this ceremonial they proceeded down the staircase to a hall below richly arranged as a Protestant chapel. The royal couple made their sacre promise on their knees, exchanged rings. The text of the sermon was aptly chosen, as alluding to the difficulties and troubles which were to be encountered in the far-off Eastern country: “Whither thou goest, I will go : and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God”.  The thunder of cannons announced that the marriage was concluded.

A reception and a state dinner was held at the  Neuwied Castle. In the image below is the royal menu served with that occasion at Neuwied.

Official letter announcing Tsar Nicholas II’s accession to the throne sent to King Carol I of Romania

The imperial heralds, clad in brilliant uniforms, accompanied by trumpeters, announced on 2 November 1894 the death of Tsar Alexander III and the accession to the throne of Nicholas II. With the occasion of his accession to the throne, Tsar Nicholas II wrote a series of official letters announcing the event to other chiefs of state. One of them reached King Carol I of Romania, through the special imperial envoy General Count Kutuzov. The letter was received by the Romanian King on 9/21 December 1894.

Nicholas

Louis Bleriot and his airplane in Romania

Familia regala, istoria aviatiei, istoria regalitatii, King Carol I, Louis Bleriot, Regele Carol I, Romanian Royal Family, royal history

On this day, one hundred years ago Louis Bleriot made the first crossing of the English Channel in an airplane, thus starting the feat of modern aviation. His airplane is practically identical with any modern light aircraft in terms of structural elements and engine.

Romania at that time was an unlikely aviation pioneer. People like Traian Vuia or Aurel Vlaicu were seminal inventors and creators of remarkable early airplanes. That was spurred by the country’s economic flourishing (as one of the important grain exporters of Europe), the circulation of ideas in the then globalised world of late Victorian period and also very importantly the royal patronage of KING CAROL I, a very technologically minded monarch, expert in modern machinery and keen to industrialise Romania.

Louis Bleriot airplane, Bucharest October 1909

It is thus not a coincidence that Louis Bleriot was invited in Romania for demonstration flights viewed also by the king and the royal court. I found an interesting photograph from that event in Bucharest, Baneasa hippodrome, on 18 October 1909, where the very airplane which crossed the Channel is shown during a repair session after a mechanical break down. ©Valentin & Diana Mandache

The National History Museum of Romania in Bucharest is hosting a new exhibition on the Romanian Royal Family, scheduled for opening at the end of next week. I am one of the organisers and plan to write more in a forthcoming post about this important royal history event after 10 May (Romania’s National Royal Day) when the exhibition will be in full swing. I also contributed with a number of exhibits from my own collection, among them a series of letters between Queen Mother Helen and Prince Leonid Lieven. Stars of the exhibition are some rare portrait paintings loaned from the National Museum of Arts Queen Marie, King Carol I, King Ferdinand, Princess Elisabeta, King Michael and his mother Queen Helen. ©Diana Mandache
