Marie, the Queen of Romania, seems to have never lost her British sense of humour even after many years spent in the culture of her adoptive country. A proof is this “Pictorial Comedy” postcard (from RNA) edited by James Henderson & Sons, London (inscribed “There are plenty of good fish in the Sea”), sent by Marie, when she was the Crown Princess of Romania, to Princess Stirbey in 1906. It is an excellent piece of Victorian humour in pictorial form and shows Marie making use of the healthy British humour when communicating with Romanian friends. ©Diana Mandache
