King Carol II of Romania died in 1953 at Estoril and was interred at the National Pantheon, Lisbon. Seven years ago in February 2003, his remains were brought back in Romania. The coffin was deposited in one of the small chapels (Sf Petru & Pavel) within the grounds of Curtea de Arges cathedral, the tomb of the Romanian royal family. Even today, seven years after I took the photograph, Carol II is not yet properly buried, his coffin still being exhibited to the public gaze in the small chapel where was intitially deposited by the authorities. ©Diana Mandache
