The royal palace and King Carol I Foundation were badly affected by machine-gun fire exchanges during the Romanian Revolution when Ceausescu was toppled from power, December 1989.

“King Michael stands apart as a moral beacon in the midst of his country’s tragedies. His greatest accomplishment was the coup of 23 August 1944 when, with immense courage and vision, he instigated the overthrow of the pro-German dictatorship, with the effect that Romania immediately joined the Allies’ cause. The country thus avoided imminent catastrophe and, according to western sources, the King’s action shortened the war by six months. This is a most remarkable achievement, even more so for a monarch just 23 years old: the army and administration followed him unwaveringly. Dear readers,
I would like to invite you to a conference in Bucharest on the subject of King Michael’s exile, based on documents that I unearthed in the ‘Securitate’ (Romanian communist secret police) archives:

“Files, Agents and Codes. The King’s Exile. Revelations from the Securitate Archives”
The event is organised by the National History Museum of Romania and is scheduled to take place on Thursday 17 July 2014, at 1 pm (entrance B, near Stavropoleos church, Postei street)
The Conference is envisaged as an educational effort to promoting the understanding of Romania’s recent history as reflected in formerly secret documents, sources revealing unexpected facets of history, of King Michael’s exile and the Romanian emigration after 1947. A multitude of files on individuals and also on a series of exile organizations, surveyed and penetrated by the communist services, complete the puzzle of that important page of the struggle against the dictatorship unfurled on the western side of the Iron Curtain. The conference will detail and analyse how their efforts were uncovered and tackled by agents of the communist state.
Thursday 17 of July 2014, 1 pm at The National History Museum of Romania, Bucharest, str. Postei, near Stavropoleos church/ Entrance B, second floor, ‘Mihai Viteazul’ conference room). The conference language is Romanian.

As I was reviewing files and notes, which I uncovered in the “CNSAS” archives for my current research, I found an interesting bit of information about one of the great British historians, Hugh Seton-Watson, who visited Romania in April 1970, at the height of the Cold War. He stayed in Bucharest at the famous Athenee Palace Hotel, in room 412, as the secret police officer informs in the note. On April the 3rd, 1970 the historian wrote a message to a local acquaintance, Mrs Domnita Filotti, a lecturer at the University of Bucharest. Of course the message was intercepted by the Romanian “securitate” and filled together with other documents. There Hugh Seton-Watson asked Mrs Filotti for a meeting to update himself about her situation and that of her family’s. He said that he came for a couple of weeks, and usually went out of his room at 9 am to go to work at the Romanian State Archives, close by Cismigiu Park, and returned at the hotel at 6 pm. Those details were useful to the communist secret services, who no doubt closely followed each of his moves in the capital of captive Romania. Diana Mandache
